Each person on board a moving recreational vessel must wear a type I, II, III, or V USCG-approved PFD. The life jacket must be in good, serviceable condition. It must also be size and condition appropriate for the activity at hand.

Compulsory PFD Requirements for California

All children of the age 12 years and younger must wear a USCG-approved life jacket. It must be in good condition and of the proper size for the intended child.

Exceptions from wearing PFDs in California

The child can be without a life jacket when on a sailboat restrained by a harness tethered to a boat. A child can also forego a life jacket when in an enclosed cabin.
