Colorado Life Jacket Requirements

Boaters in Colorado must have a type I, II, or III USCG-approved life jacket while on board a recreational vessel, and the boat is underway.

Boat Length

In Colorado boats of all lengths are required to have a type I, II, or III PFD that is USCG-approved.

Compulsory PFD Requirements for Colorado

All kids 12 years and younger must be in type I, II, or III USCG-approved PFD life jacket. Children must wear the PFD at all times when the boat is underway, and the PFD should be in good, serviceable condition.

Exceptions from wearing PFDs in Colorado

If a child is in an enclosed cabin or below deck, then they can be without the PFD.
