All boats in Hawaii waters must have at least one Coast Guard Approved PFD for each person on board an underway vessel. PFDs must also be worn when the boat is anchored or moored in a non-designated off-shore mooring area.

Compulsory PFD Requirements for Hawaii

All children 12 years and under must wear a USCG-approved life jacket while aboard any boat that is underway on Hawaiian waters. The PFD should also be worn while the boat is anchored or moored in a non-designated offshore mooring area.

Exceptions from wearing PFDs in Hawaii

It is not a required for the child to wear a PFD while in an enclosed cabin or when the child is below deck.
