All boaters in a vessel that is underway must wear a personal flotation device in Maryland waters.

Boat Length

Maryland requires that boats less than 21ft in length have PFDs that are US Coast Guard-approved.

Compulsory PFD Requirements for Maryland

All children under 13 years must wear a USCG-approved PFD. For children under the age of 4, additional features appropriate for infants apply. These features include an extra strap to secure the kid within the PFD, an inflatable collar or headrest, and a web handle to ensure the child is easily accessible from the boat.

Exceptions from wearing PFDs in Maryland

It is not compulsory to be in a life jacket when a child is in an enclosed cabin or is below deck.
