Montana Life Jacket Requirements

Each person on a vessel that is underway must wear a USCG approved PFD. Each person occupying a sailboard must wear an approved PFD.

Boat Length

In Montana, vessels that are less than 26ft should abide by the Montana State laws on wearing of PFDs.

Compulsory PFD Requirements for Montana

Children under 12 years and sailboard operators younger than 15 years must be in a USCG approved PFD at all times. All PFDs must fit properly and be in serviceable condition.

Exceptions when a Life Jacket does not need to be worn

There are no exceptions for when passengers cannot wear a personal floatation device.
